On December 17, 2020, the Strategic Missile Forces (Strategic Missile Forces) celebrate the 61st anniversary of its formation. In 1959, on this day, a Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR was issued, in accordance with which the post of Commander-in-Chief of the Missile Forces was established, the General Staff of the Strategic Missile Forces and other military command and control bodies were formed. This day determines the date of the formation of the Strategic Missile Forces – a new type of the Armed Forces.

Today, the Strategic Missile Forces is a branch of the Russian Armed Forces, which is the most important component of Russia’s strategic nuclear forces (SNF). They are permanent readiness troops, on alert in readiness to carry out combat missions by order of the President of the Russian Federation – the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Russia.

About 6 thousand people are on duty at combat posts every day.

At present, the Strategic Missile Forces have seven types of missile systems in their combat strength, which can effectively respond to any challenges of the time. Among them are four types of stationary silo-based missile systems: Voevoda, Stilet, Topol-M and Yars. The mobile-based grouping includes the Topol, Topol-M and Yars mobile ground-based missile systems.

In recent years, the supply of Yars missile launchers with intercontinental ballistic missiles has made it possible to ensure stable rates of rearmament of both silo-based and mobile-based groupings. The implementation of the measures planned for 2020 for the rearmament of the Strategic Missile Forces group will increase the share of modern strategic missile systems to 81% and increase the group’s capabilities to carry out nuclear deterrence tasks.
