IN Moscow Zooafter the bears, chipmunks went into hibernation. They go to sleep in wooden nest boxes, curled up in a ball.
“For many animals, a comfortable winter sleep is a guarantee of health and future successful breeding. Therefore, we try to provide the necessary sleep conditions for all our inhabitants. Several wooden nest boxes have been prepared for the chipmunks. They choose which one they will winter in. The animals are covered with felt, moss and dry grass, with which they insulate their nests, ”said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
Interestingly, the hibernation of the chipmunks can be interrupted. As soon as it gets warmer, they wake up, go out for a walk and even have a snack. Therefore, the zoo makes sure that there is food in their bowls. But the chipmunks themselves are very thrifty: there is always food in their nest boxes, which is why they have to sleep on heaps of nuts and seeds.
Chipmunks hibernate one by one. Since rodents strive to make as much supplies as possible, they can even carry food from each other, which sometimes causes conflicts.
Siberian chipmunks are used to the cold. In nature, they hibernate in hollows, where the temperature is slightly higher than outside. It is the abundant supply of food that allows the animals to wait out the harsh winters.
You can meet a chipmunk’s dwelling not only on tall old trees, but also in thickets of bird cherry, birch or willow. It does not live in open places and in a clean, tall-stemmed forest without undergrowth of young growth and bushes.
Burrows of this rodent sometimes reach three meters in length. They have, in addition to the nest chamber, one or two large storerooms for supplies and the same number of dead ends – toilets. The living area is lined with dry grass and leaves. In it, animals sleep at night and during hibernation. The offspring also appears there.
Chipmunks wake up in spring at different times. Earlier than others, those whose dwellings are illuminated by the sun, freeing them from snow, come out of their holes. Once it gets colder, the chipmunks go back to their burrows and wait for warming. If there are reserves in the pantries, then they eat them.
