Relief for many taxpayers decided

With the Annual Tax Act 2020, the Bundestag passed many tax reliefs. The Union was able to set many important accents in the parliamentary procedure, but could also have imagined further changes. The Federal Council still has to approve this law.

The parliamentary negotiations were intense. The responsible reporter Olav Gutting emphasized that the law was changed in 42 places. This meant that the original schedule could not be adhered to. With the law, however, many good measures would be implemented. For example, doubling the relief amount for single parents to 4008 euros beyond 2021. The aim is to set an example for the difficult situation of single parents, emphasized Gutting. The one-time tax exemption for the Corona bonus of 1,500 euros has also been extended by six months to June 30, 2021.

Tax evasion longer punishable

We have taken an important step in the fight against tax evasion. Because with the Annual Tax Act, the limitation period for the prosecution of serious tax evasion is extended from 10 to 15 years. In addition, it will in future be possible to collect already statute-barred offenses from tax evasion cases on a large scale.

Signals for employees and volunteers

With the creation of a home office flat rate, a strong signal should be sent to all employees, explained Sebastian Brehm. This would take into account the special stresses in everyday work during the corona pandemic.

An important part of the Annual Tax Act is also the volunteering package with many important measures for volunteers and associations. For example, the lump sum for trainers will be increased to 3,000 euros and the volunteer allowance to 840 euros. Donations of up to 300 euros will be easier to prove in the future using the deposit or transfer slip. Fritz Güntzler regretted that the Federal Ministry of Finance still owed the promised modernization of non-profit law.

Goal: Relief for companies

But there is dissatisfaction on one point. Improvements in tax loss offsetting were not implemented. “This is not about a tax cut!” Stated Güntzler. It is high time something was done here. Now in the crisis, this would be the right tool to give companies more liquidity. A reform of the corporate tax is just as necessary, emphasized Sebastian Brehm at the end. The Union would continue to work towards this in 2021.
