Bogotá (Dec 15/20). The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Claudia Blum, opened, on behalf of the National Government, the launch of the Colombia chapter of the Regional Response Plan for Refugees and Migrants from Venezuela (RMRP) 2021, whose construction was led by the Interagency Group on Migratory Flows Mixed (GIFMM), with the support of the National Government.
During the event, Minister Blum highlighted Colombia’s commitment to welcoming more than 1.7 million Venezuelans with a vocation to remain in the country and expressed the importance of remembering the 500,000 Colombians who had to return to the national territory because of the strong multidimensional crisis, now aggravated by the pandemic, which is being experienced in the neighboring country. Likewise, he highlighted the inclusion of migrants in national plans within the framework of the Health Emergency to face COVID-19 and the efforts of the Government to guarantee not only their access to health systems, education, protection, among others, but also the efforts being made to achieve their economic insertion in Colombia.
The event’s agenda included the intervention of the Border Manager of the Presidency of the Republic, Lucas Gómez; the presentation of the Colombian Chapter of the Regional Plan by GIFMM, with the participation of representatives of national and territorial entities; delegates from specialized agencies, funds and programs of the United Nations and non-governmental organizations; and Ambassadors and Heads of Mission from donor countries.
The Colombia chapter of the Plan estimates a financial request of USD765 million, considering that more than 4 million people in the country (migrants, refugees, Colombian returnees and host communities) will require some type of intervention. The Regional Plan made a total appeal for USD $ 1,437 million, for 17 countries receiving migration.
