The Department of the Environment and Security (DES) presents the results of attacks attributable to lynx and wolf on production animals in 2020. Throughout the territory of Vaud, three sheep and a calf were killed by large carnivores between April and November of this year. In 2021, DES will renew and strengthen the measures put in place to support farmers.

During the 2020 summer season in the canton of Vaud, the lynx killed a sheep in April in La Comballaz (Ormont-Dessous) while the wolf attacked two sheep in August in Esserts (Le Lieu) and a calf at the Reculet-Dessus (Gingins) in August also. Genetic analyzes have failed to identify the individual in the case of the two sheep killed at Les Esserts. They did, however, determine that one of the wolves of the pack that formed in the Vaudois Jura in 2019, the male M95, was the perpetrator of the attack on the calf at Reculet-Dessus.

For this year as a whole, compensation for damage to production animals amounted to CHF 2,600.

Support measures and population monitoring

Following these attacks, DES met with representatives of the breeders as well as Prometerre to develop a common strategy for the protection of herds. With this in mind, tests were carried out during the summer on the Rionde-Dessus mountain pasture (Marchissy). As part of these discussions, DES also affirmed its desire to renew and strengthen the measures already in place to support breeders, such as the collaboration with the Jean-Marc Landry Foundation and Pro Conseil for the monitoring and protection of herds. Additional measures will be announced by DES in the first quarter of 2021.

At the same time, the populations of wolves and lynx present in the cantonal territory will continue to be the subject of detailed monitoring in collaboration with the KORA Foundation, which specializes in the ecology of carnivores and the management of wildlife.

Consultation with the stakeholders concerned

The State of Vaud is also keen to involve and inform all the players concerned in the monitoring of species. It is in this spirit that he established in 2008 the Large Carnivores Group, which includes representatives from agricultural circles, the Confederation, nature conservation organizations, breeders, scientific circles and hunters. This group allows close coordination with all the interlocutors identified in Vaud.
