The crews of Ka-27 helicopters of a separate shipborne helicopter regiment of the Air Force and Air Defense Association of the Northern Fleet have worked out landing on the deck of the new frigate “Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov” in the polar night.

The training took place in the Kola Bay on the roadstead of the main fleet base – the city of Severomorsk. They were attended by 8 helicopter crews and the personnel of the flight support group on the ship. The pilots made more than 20 take-offs and landings on the helipad while the ship was at anchor. Landing took place in complete darkness using navigation and lighting devices.

Landing on the deck of a surface ship is one of the features of training sea pilots – helicopter pilots. Such skills allow pilots to successfully operate in isolation from coastal airfields, including on long voyages of ships of the Northern Fleet.

Last week, from a long voyage, together with the crew of the large anti-submarine ship “Vice-Admiral Kulakov”, the pilots and aviation technicians of the helicopter regiment returned to perform anti-submarine and search and rescue missions on the corresponding modifications of the Ka-27 helicopters involved in the campaign.

Currently, in a separate naval helicopter aviation regiment, several helicopter crews are completing a training cycle for participation in the next long-distance cruise of ships and vessels of the Northern Fleet.
