President Ashraf Ghani chaired Covid-19 emergency response meeting this morning at the Presidential Palace. UNSG Special Representative Deborah Lyons, acting country directors of UNICEF and WHO for Afghanistan also attended the meeting.

President Ghani discussed preparations for the second wave of the pandemic that may hit the country and articulated a series of immediate issues such as oxygen supplies, test capacities, training of the first responders, re-directing resources, mobilization of a whole government and partnership approach.

The President instructed Ministry of Public Health to multiply its efforts to be able to mitigate and deal with the challenges ahead of the second wave in coordination with  the relevant international agencies.

Deborah Lyons, expressed willingness to cooperate with the government of Afghanistan in collaboration with UNICEF and WHO.

President Ashraf Ghani said the Ministry of Public Health and international partner agencies need to have a clear picture of the second wave of corona to enable them to mobilize their available resources to deal with the challenges ahead in health service delivery.
