Brinkhaus and Dobrindt on the approval of a first vaccine against corona
Ralph Brinkhaus and Alexander Dobrindt see the expected approval of a corona vaccine in the coming days as a sign of hope. At the beginning of the last week of session of the Bundestag this year, the chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and his first deputy expressed their confidence that the vaccination of older people and medical staff can begin immediately after approval.
EU medicines authority wants to decide before Christmas
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced on Tuesday morning that it would present its opinion on the vaccine developed in Germany by BioNTech and Pfizer on December 21. Approval of the vaccine, which is already on the market in Great Britain and the USA, among others, is generally expected.
Vaccination preparations well on their way
Brinkhaus expressed understanding that the EMA did not give its approval as quickly as the authorities in other countries. One owes a thorough examination to the people, said the chairman of the CDU / CSU parliamentary group: “Security is a very, very important good.” If the approval comes before Christmas, “we are on the right track”. He pointed out that preparations for the vaccinations at the local level had progressed well and that some of the vaccination centers were already operational.
Bundestag debates vaccination strategy
At the request of the coalition parliamentary groups, the Bundestag will debate the vaccination strategy, which will be determined by means of a regulation, in a current hour on Wednesday. The strategy follows the proposals of the Standing Vaccination Commission (STIKO), which gives priority to people over 80 years of age, residents and employees of old people’s and nursing homes as well as medical staff in emergency rooms and Covid wards. In the opinion of Brinkhaus and Dobrindt, a separate law is not necessary for the vaccination strategy, since the Bundestag has already set the framework with the Third Civil Protection Act. Dobrindt announced the creation of a parliamentary advisory body for the coming year to deal with all questions relating to vaccination.
“In 2021 we have to leave Corona behind us”
The CSU regional group leader sees the approval of a vaccine as an opportunity “that we can talk about normalcy in life again”. He emphasized: “2021 has to be the year we leave Corona behind us.” The end of 2020 with the tightened lockdown means another particular hardship for many. “We are closing large parts of the country, but our hearts have to be open, especially when we think of the Christmas holidays.”
Help for retailers urgently
Brinkhaus was satisfied with the consistent measures to contain the corona pandemic, which will apply from Wednesday. Then all shops will have to close with a few exceptions, including grocery stores, pharmacies, post offices and banks. Compensating the retail trade is important to Brinkhaus. He emphasized that he should not experience any liquidity bottlenecks. The discounts for the bridging aid should flow quickly.
