Four out of five people in need of care (80% or 3.31 million) were cared for at home. Of these, 2.33 million people in need of care were mostly cared for by relatives. Another 0.98 million people in need of care also lived in private households and were cared for with or entirely by outpatient care and support services. One fifth of those in need of care (20% or 0.82 million) received full inpatient care in nursing homes.

Compared to December 2017, the number of people in need of full inpatient care in homes has remained constant (+ 0.0%). In contrast, the number of people cared for at home increased by 710,000 (+ 27%).

At the end of 2019, 80% of those in need of care were 65 years of age or older, and more than a third (34%) were at least 85 years old. The majority of those in need of care were female (62%).
