The Tu-154 plane of the Russian Defense Ministry on Tuesday delivered a particle of the Eternal Flame to the capital of Serbia, from which the flame was lit in the memorial complex to the Liberators of Belgrade.

The eternal flame was accompanied by a company of the Guard of Honor of the Preobrazhensky regiment of the Western Military District. The particle was transported in a special lamp that did not stop burning on board the aircraft. The particle was taken on Monday at the walls of the Moscow Kremlin from the Eternal Flame at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

The board of the Russian Defense Ministry arrived at the Serbian airbase Batainitsa, from where the lamp was transported by road to the complex of the Liberators of Belgrade. The ceremony of lighting the Eternal Flame at the memorial took place there.

The eternal flame at the Memorial to the Liberators of Belgrade was created in 2020. The construction of a new architectural composition was launched in February this year by the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, laying a commemorative capsule in the foundation of the Eternal Flame.

Memorial Complex to the Liberators of Belgrade is the burial place of Soviet and Yugoslav soldiers who died in October 1944 during the liberation of the capital of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. According to the inscription on the balustrade of the memorial, 967 soldiers and officers of the Red Army and 2,953 fighters of the People’s Liberation Army of Yugoslavia gave their lives in the battles for Belgrade, 1,395 Yugoslav and 808 Soviet soldiers and officers are buried in the cemetery. A monument to the Soviet soldier is installed in the depths of the complex.
