Today, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, Army General Sergei Shoigu, and the Minister of Defense of the People’s Republic of China, Colonel-General Wei Fenghe, signed a Protocol on the extension of the agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on notifications of launches of ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles.

The extension of the Agreement is aimed at maintaining the regime of mutual notification of upcoming and completed launches of ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles in Russia and China in the interests of increasing predictability in the security sphere.

During the previous ten-year period of validity, the document has proven its effectiveness. He contributed to the further strengthening of mutual trust and openness in relations between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China.

The agreed decision to extend the Agreement for a ten-year period is an important contribution to the development of mutually beneficial and equitable cooperation between Russia and China and acquires particular relevance in the context of the US deployment of global missile defense systems, as well as intentions to deploy intermediate and shorter-range ground-based missiles in the Asia-Pacific region.

The defense departments of Russia and China intend to further build up strategic contacts and coordination between the armed forces of the two countries, improve the existing mechanisms of military cooperation, expand interaction in order to jointly confront the challenges of regional and global security.
