MIL OSI Translation. Government of the Republic of France statements from French to English –

Source: Republic of France in French The French Republic has issued the following statement:

Departing on September 18, the anti-submarine frigate (FASM) Latouche-Tréville, deployed for two and a half months in the Mediterranean, returned to its base port of Brest on December 4.

One of the main highlights of the deployment was the frigate’s participation in Operation IRINI to enforce the arms embargo on Libya imposed by United Nations Security Council resolutions. For 38 days, the direct support of Latouche-Tréville to Task Force (TF) 464 marked the return of France to this European Union operation.

Throughout its tenure, the frigate Latouche-Tréville questioned 71 merchant ships sailing off Libya. The objective is to determine the loads of these ships, their origin, their destination but also the composition of their crew.

At the same time, thirteen friendly approaches were carried out in order to discuss the local maritime situation with sailors from merchant ships. Finally, two visitation operations were triggered on suspicion of transporting weapons to Libya.

The FASM also participated in two Surface action groups (SAG) in the central and eastern Mediterranean with the frigates La Fayette and the air defense frigate (FDA) Forbin. These participations thus made it possible to affirm France’s attachment to the freedom of navigation and helped to demonstrate our capacity for action.

Despite the intensity of operational activity and the degraded health context, Latouche-Tréville carried out numerous exercises in addition to its main mission in order to maintain a high level of training and maintain its responsiveness. It thus conducted a mainly anti-submarine cooperation exercise with the Egyptian Navy and carried out aviation maneuvers with a Panther helicopter from Forbin, a Portuguese Merlin helicopter and an Italian AB212 helicopter.

At the heart of the Covid-19 pandemic, the mission was marked by particularly strict health requirements. Thus, no contact with the outside was possible during the quayside releases.

The periods of operational rest, in particular in La Sude (Greece), were an opportunity to organize, in compliance with health instructions, many physical activities to allow the crew to maintain and regenerate while avoiding any contact with the local population.

Before coming to turn the hawsers in Brest, the Latouche-Tréville ensured a surveillance mission of maritime approaches in the Atlantic, as part of the maritime defense of the territory.

Sensitive to the risks that human, oil and arms trafficking generated by the Libyan crisis poses to regional stability, France began in 2015 with its European partners in the European Union’s operation to fight against smuggling of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea, called EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA. In 2020, in the context of the end of Operation EUNAVFOR MED SOPHIA, France is therefore continuing its commitment alongside its European Union partners in the context of Operation EUNAVFOR MED IRINI.
