It seems that the Nagorny District, stretching along the Varshavskoye Highway and the Paveletskoye tracks of the Moscow Railway (MZhD), does not stand out in any way, but this is only at first glance. Among the advantages, residents note safety and green courtyards, good conditions for children due to the availability of kindergartens, schools and universities, as well as a convenient transport system and a unique sports infrastructure.

Read the article on how the Nagorny District has changed in recent years and what changes to expect in the future.

From school to technopark

Today the Nagorny District has all the conditions for comfortable study and work. Educational institutions have been keeping a high standard of quality for many years. Bauman Engineering School No. 1580 is included in the top 70 best schools in the city. High positions in the rating in different years were occupied by school No. 1450 “Olymp”, school No. 1862 and school No. 504.

Thanks to the program “My region”over the past three years, current repairs have been carried out in the buildings of schools No. 2016 (Chongarsky Boulevard, 17) and 1450 (Krivorozhskaya Street, 27), the territory of School No. 1450 (Chongarsky Boulevard, 12) and a kindergarten on Fruktova Street ( building 8, building 4). In addition, it is planned to demolish the existing school building on Bolotnikovskaya street (building 6) and build an educational building for 450 places in its place. There are also plans to build two schools, each of which is designed for 600 students, a school with a block of primary classes for 575 places and three kindergartens, which will be able to attend 550 pupils.

Since the end of this year, education has become available for people with mental disabilities. In the building on Varshavskoe shosse (house 68, building 1) there are inclusive workshops that help to find a hobby and find a future profession… Visitors can learn weaving, decorating, felting, pottery making, decorative carpentry, using technologies, equipment and materials accessible to people with disabilities.

For those wishing to get higher education, the Moscow University of Finance and Law is open, which trains specialists in more than 50 areas and is among the top best non-state accredited universities in the country. On the basis of the university, “Saturdays of the Moscow school student” are held.

Representatives of a wide variety of professions, including scientists, can find work close to home. The Institute’s developments are used in nuclear power plants, in the electric power industry, in mining, oil and gas and petrochemical enterprises, aircraft repair plants and in medical institutions.

In addition, in the region are located the Research Institute of Probiotics and the All-Russian Research and Design Institute of Hard Alloys and Refractory Metals.

It helps to develop business and create new jobs. Technopark “Nagatino”, which received its status in 2015. Today, more than 40 residents work on its territory and there is a Free Swimming coworking space for almost 120 seats.

The residents’ activities are concentrated in the areas of light industry, instrumentation, biotechnology, IT and printing. The range of their products is quite wide: these are innovative thermal underwear, exclusive books, and such complex products as industrial air conditioners, laser machines, printed circuit boards, test systems for laboratory diagnostics, equipment for detecting genetically modified organisms and others.

Available transport

Nagorny is one of the most convenient areas in terms of transport accessibility. Residents can use buses, trams, metro, the Moscow Central Circle (MCC) or Paveletsky trains of the Moscow Railway. Residents have access to 90 stops of ground public transport.

Thanks to the reconstructed Varshavskoye Highway, motorists can quickly reach the city center, the Third Transport Ring and the Moscow Ring Road. Chongarskiy boulevard, Nakhimovskiy and Balaklavskiy avenues provide a link with neighboring districts.

In 1969, the first metro station “Varshavskaya” was opened here, and 14 years later, two more – “Nagornaya” and “Nagatinskaya”. Now “Varshavskaya” is closed for reconstruction, after completion of work in 2022 it will become part of Big roundabout metro line. A large transport interchange hub will appear on the base of the station, providing transfers between the metro station, the railway platform and ground transport. During the reconstruction, a free KM bus route was organized, following from the Kashirskaya metro station to stops near Varshavskaya and Kakhovskaya.

In 2016, the MCC station Verkhniye Kotly was opened in the area. The ground ring allowed residents of the northern part of the district to get the metro within walking distance, reduce travel time to neighboring areas and change to other metro lines, bypassing the center. At the end of 2018, the MCC was integrated with the tracks of the Paveletsky direction. For this, the Verkhniye Kotly stopping point was built and a “dry feet” crossing was equipped. As a result, the distance for transfer to the MCC was reduced from 900 to 50 meters, the load on the Nagatinskaya station of the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya metro line and Paveletsky railway station was reduced.

The area adjacent to the MCC station Verkhniye Kotly and the railway platform of the same name was improved. The pavement and road surface was renewed, 190 new lanterns were installed, as well as 70 benches and ballot boxes. The territory has become more green: a lawn was laid out and 170 trees and 600 bushes were planted. Seven modern stops have been set up for public transport passengers. In addition, children and sports grounds were put in order.

Sports and healthy lifestyle

Fans of skiing are well aware of the Nagorny District – there is a sports complex “Kant” where you can go snowboarding and skiing. Visitors have access to 17 trails with a total length of 3550 meters, nine of them are educational. The complex has a sports school and a cafe, and in the summer there is a roller-skating slope and a bike park.

Near the station of the MCC Verkhniye Kotly, the Nagorny cycle park is open, there are tracks for BMX, mountain and other bicycles. Skaters and fans of extreme sports will not be bored – there is a climbing wall in the center of the park, and a rope town stretches over the track. All sites are decorated with graffiti.

In 2024, during the reorganization of the Verkhniye Kotly industrial zone, a sports and recreation center will be built in Electrolyte proezd. Also, in the near future, at the request of residents, an indoor skating rink will be built, which can be visited at any time of the year.

New “Angara” and comfortable places to stay

After the improvement, cozy places for recreation and walks appeared in the area. A pedestrian alley with benches and playgrounds has been built on Chongarsky Boulevard.

A park with a semicircular pergola, park sofas and 30 lanterns was arranged near 6b on Bolotnikovskaya street last year, and paths, wooden sheds and a modern playground were made in the veteran courtyard on the other side of the street, coniferous trees, bushes and a new lawn were planted.

On one of the main walking streets of the district – Chernomorsky Boulevard – a comfortable zone with garden sofas, arches, pergolas and gazebos has appeared. For active recreation there are two sports grounds, four tennis tables and a playground.

In addition, residents can take a walk at the Krivoy Rog pond. The reservoir was cleared of silt deposits, the bank was strengthened, and comfortable walking paths were made around.

In 2018–2019 alone, 49 courtyard areas were landscaped and 18 children’s and 15 sports grounds were installed. Some of the objects were chosen by the residents themselves through voting in the “Active Citizen” project. Thanks to one of them, a playground for walking dogs was made near house 3a on Fruktova street, and playgrounds and sports simulators were installed near house 8, building 1 on Fruktovaya street and on Varshavskoye shosse (houses 50 and 69, buildings 1–2).

A significant event for the residents of Nagorny was the opening in 2019 of the first multifunctional district center out of 39 under construction (reconstructed) on the basis of former cinemas… The old Angara cinema on Chongarsky Boulevard has been transformed into a modern cultural and leisure space with four cinemas for 339 seats, a recreation area, premises for master classes and children’s clubs, a gallery of cafes and restaurants, and farm stores. “Angara” has retained not only its historical name, but also the design of the original signboard, which the locals are used to seeing on the roof of the cinema.

In the future, residents of the district will have one more place of attraction. A retail and office center with an area of 230 thousand square meters will be built as part of the Nagatinskaya metro station. There will be a pastry cafe, coffee shop, food court, conference area, grocery store and 73 non-food items.
