This year, for the first time, specialists from the Moscow Zoo managed to capture how clubfoots go into hibernation. You can watch a short video on

The bears in the Moscow Zoo went into hibernation. Three animals plunged into a long sleep: the 28-year-old Kamchatka brown bear Rosa and her neighbors, the Himalayan bears Aladdin (26 years old) and Budur (25 years old).

In the wild, some animals need hibernation to survive the cold. This applies to marmots, jerboas, raccoons, raccoon dogs, dormouse, brown and Himalayan bears. In winter it is more difficult for them to get food. Therefore, they accumulate fat reserves in advance, and sleep allows them to be spent sparingly. If bears do not fall asleep on time, they become aggressive and even dangerous from hunger and fatigue.

The zoo tries not to interfere with the natural processes for animals, creating conditions as close to nature as possible. Therefore, the life cycles of the inhabitants of the zoo are the same as those of their wild relatives.

“We started preparing the bears for hibernation in early fall. For several months they received high-calorie food. The clubfoot leaned heavily on fresh fish, sweet fruits (pears, apples, grapes), dried fruits, vegetables and melons. The most favorite treat of bears is honey. By the beginning of December, Rosa, Aladdin and Budur gained sufficient body weight. During the winter, bears usually lose up to one quarter of their weight. In their dens, which are equipped in the closed aviaries of the zoo, soft straw was laid. The bears buried themselves in it and made themselves comfortable. For the first time, zoologists managed to photograph this. In total, the process of immersion in hibernation takes several days, ”said Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.

During sleep, bears should not be disturbed by strangers, so only employees familiar to the animals can approach the closed enclosure. Zoologists check if hibernation is going well. Also, video surveillance cameras are installed above the dens of predators. Experts can monitor animals in real time around the clock.

The bears will wake up when warm and sunny weather returns to Moscow. As a rule, they come out of hibernation at the end of March. But if the winter is long, clubfoot can sleep through April.

Not all bears of the Moscow Zoo fall asleep during the cold season. In winter, the polar bear Wrangel, as well as the pandas Dingdin and Zhuyi, remain awake.

With the arrival of the first cold weather, marmots also fell asleep in the Moscow Zoo. They will spend four to five months in their burrows. And for the winter they placed in special refrigerating chambers… Raccoons, a raccoon dog, chipmunks and a dormouse are also preparing for a long sleep.

In addition, the bats rehabilitation center of the capital zoo accepts bats from the townspeople. These animals are also supposed to fall asleep in winter, but they sometimes wake up in the cold months and even fly into apartments. Any resident of the capital who has found a bat can consult with the specialists of the bats overexposure center by phone: +7 (968) 476-88-06 and agree on the transfer of the animal. He will be fed if necessary and put to bed in the refrigerator, and released in the spring. Detailed information about the center can be found on the official website of the zoo…

The heat-loving animals of the zoo were moved to heated enclosures and will be returned to the street only with the arrival of spring. You can watch the life of birds and animals of the capital’s zoo online. The photographs and videos show training and feeding of animals. They are published on the pages of the zoo in social networks.
