Four-year anniversary of 21st Century Cures and Pfizer’s first shipment of the COVID-19 vaccine fall on same day

WASHINGTON, D.C – U.S. Reps. Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Fred Upton (R-MI) – authors of the 21stCentury Cures Act – issued the following statement, as tomorrow marks the four-year anniversary of the 21st Century Cures Act becoming law, the same day Pfizer will ship their historic vaccine:

“Tomorrow marks the four-year anniversary of President Obama signing the 21st Century Cures Act into law. This landmark, bipartisan legislation, which we spearheaded, is one of our proudest achievements in Congress. We’re glad to know that because of 21st Century Cures, we’re on the cusp of finding treatments to some of the most tragic illnesses – including Sickle Cell and various forms of cancer – that have taken far too many lives.

“While we were working on passing this important legislation to accelerate the approval and deployment of cutting-edge, life-saving cures, treatments, and vaccines, our focus was entirely on renewing hope for patients and their families.

“Well, tomorrow, our hopes – and the hope of the whole world – will be renewed. Tomorrow, on the four-year anniversary of 21st Century Cures becoming law, the first COVID-19 vaccine will be shipped nationwide from Pfizer’s global manufacturing facility in Portage.  Coupled with an expected Moderna EUA by the end of the week, as many as 100 million Americans will be vaccinated by the end of March. That is real hope.

“When we first passed 21st Century Cures, we aimed to advance medical research, foster a new era of medical innovations, and help find cures to some of the world’s cruelest diseases. We knew it would make an impact but never did we expect its importance to play such an outsized role so quickly. As we fight to end the worst public health crisis in a century, we are so grateful for all of the scientists, health care workers, and the good folks at Pfizer who have worked in record time to find this vaccine.

“The world is better off because of 21st Century Cures and Pfizer’s incredible work. Tomorrow will be a historic day – one we will never forget and once again reminds us of what we can accomplish when we work together. To Pfizer, job well done, and to the world, there is truly a bright light at the end of this dark tunnel.”
