The following is issued on behalf of the University Grants Committee:      The Research Grants Council (RGC) today (December 13) held the Theme-based Research Scheme (TRS) Public Symposium 2020 online, during which the project teams of 12 TRS projects funded in the third, fourth and fifth rounds of the TRS exercises showcased their achievements with 210 participants, including those from the research community, industry and the general public.           The objective of the TRS is to focus academic research efforts of the University Grants Committee-funded universities on themes of strategic importance to the long-term development of Hong Kong. Ten rounds of the TRS exercises have been conducted so far.           The Chairman of the RGC, Professor Joseph Lee, said he was glad to see the wide range of novel discoveries by the research projects, including breakthroughs in viral and influenza research and treatments of diseases as well as frontier knowledge and technology in sustaining the environment, healthcare and transportation systems.            “Some of these project teams have established effective collaborations with public service providers and government departments. I am looking forward to seeing the societal and economic impacts of their research in the near future,” Professor Lee said.           The symposium featured presentations and exchange sessions that offered opportunities for sharing of ideas amongst participants. Videos on the research projects are available on the RGC website. Please visit for details of the event and research projects.
