Beijing FC’s head coach Bruno Genesio believes his side’s serious approach was key to picking up their fifth win in the 2020 AFC Champions League as they beat FC Seoul 3-1 in Group E on Monday.
Goals from Jonathan Viera, Renato Augusto and Zhang Yuning were only replied by Yun Ju-tae’s late strike as the two sides played out an exciting match with plenty of chances at both ends.
“Before the game I asked the players to play with a very serious attitude and respect the opponents,” said Genesio.
“We played well and we knew that we had to fight hard and score goals, which we did today and even after we conceded, we responded by scoring again. I don’t think we could have done better in today’s match and we scored our opportunities so now we just need to prepare for the next game.
“I told my players that we need to win the game and get first place and now we have achieved that. For the last game we need to rest the players who played a lot and prepare for the Round of 16.”
His counterpart Lee Won-jun remained optimistic about his side’s chances in the competition thanks to a fighting performance ahead of their final group stage match in three days’ time.
“After the defeat against Beijing FC in the first match I told the players to play without pressure which they did today,” said Lee.
“We prepared well and my players did their best today, so I would like to congratulate them for their efforts. Regardless of the result, today’s performance gives me optimism for the future of this club.
“We are going to try to analyse Melbourne Victory and understand them better because this is now a very important match for us. The players have the ambition to win and we treat every match as a final.”
