Additional funds for material and personnel
The budget committee of the German Bundestag finally discussed the individual plan of the Federal Ministry of Defense in today’s adjustment meeting on the federal budget 2021. Eckhardt Rehberg, budget spokesman, and Reinhard Brandl, responsible rapporteur for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group for the individual plan, explain:
Eckhardt Rehberg: “The defense budget is growing for the seventh year in a row – by around € 1.55 billion to around € 45.6 billion. In addition, there are around 1.2 billion euros in funds from the economic stimulus program for early investments to strengthen the economy and to set up a center for digitization and technology research. Despite the Corona crisis, we are investing heavily in the Bundeswehr and are not letting the defense budget degenerate into a quarry for other departments. As the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, we continue to ensure long-term reliability for our soldiers. The current needs in the area of armaments procurement in 2021 will be met with around 610 million euros. This applies in particular to projects within the framework of international armaments cooperation such as the procurement of aircraft of the EUROFIGHTER type – Tranche 4 or the EURODROHNE project. At the same time, this sets economic stimuli. “
Reinhard Brandl: “We place immense demands on our soldiers. It is therefore our duty to ensure that you receive the best possible equipment and the appreciation it deserves. With today’s resolutions, we are taking a big step closer to this goal. Based on the armed forces’ concept of ammunition stockpiling, we are making around 114 million euros available for ammunition procurement. We are increasing the funds for combat clothing by around 17.5 million euros in order to ensure that soldiers are properly equipped in the field. We in the Committee on Budgets will be keeping a close eye on the development of influx in this area. We passed the relevant resolutions on this today.
Traveling by train in uniform proved extremely successful. The service was used much more by the soldiers than initially expected. We are therefore increasing the funds earmarked for this by a further 30 million euros. “
