In total, more than 10 aircraft of the Baltic Fleet naval aviation were involved in the development of a complex element. Refueling in the air was carried out both day and night, singly and as part of a pair of aircraft.

Air refueling is one of the most challenging types of flight training. Only experienced specialists were admitted to it, who during the flight carefully observed the speed and altitude regime. The crew of the Il-78 tanker took off with a maximum takeoff weight of about 200 tons, transferring at least 10 tons during the flight to each of the naval aircraft. The pilots at an altitude of 2 to 5 thousand meters at a speed of 550-600 km / h approached the refueler at a distance of 10-15 meters, the released boom “contacted” the cone-sensor of the refueler, and then maintained this distance until the fuel was fully pumped.

At night, refueling was complicated by the fact that it was performed using additional lighting installed both on the Il-78 and on the refueling aircraft. Such elements of flight training of the Baltic Fleet naval aviation crews are performed on a regular basis, at least twice during the training period.

Refueling in the air increases the range and capabilities of aircraft and allows them to perform assigned tasks at a great distance from the home airfield.
