Dear Madam President! My dear colleagues! First of all, I would like to congratulate Ladies Doudna and Charpentier on their discovery of the CRISPR / Cas9 scissors. For this they have undoubtedly earned the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. But I would also like to express my respect for the agricultural scientist Norman Borlaug, also a Nobel Prize winner. As the father of the Green Revolution, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970,

(Shout from the AfD: Obama got that too!)

with the reason – I quote -:

More than any other person of our time, he has helped bring about bread for a hungry world.

(Harald Ebner [BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN]: The bread is now too salty!)

Regardless of all the unfounded horror scenarios that the greens are spreading in an endless loop in connection with the new breeding techniques, I never tire of explaining to the people in our country that it is precisely these new breeding techniques that offer a great opportunity for a second green wave. We in Germany are not familiar with these problems. We live in a land of milk and honey; our shelves are always full.

If you, my dear colleagues from the Greens – and unfortunately I also have to mention my colleagues from the SPD and many others here – would finally give our researchers and plant breeders a little attention and a spark of trust, you would understand the technology too. Unfortunately, you did not take up the invitation from the glass laboratory to get to know this technology.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU and the FDP)

Only CDU / CSU and FDP representatives were there. But they shone through their absence.

(Shouting from the CDU / CSU: Hear! Hear!)

But yes, of course it could have happened that you would have had to give up your blocking attitude.

(Renate Künast [BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN]: Are we not allowed to go somewhere alone? – Oliver Krischer [BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN]: Should we go somewhere by the hand of Mr. de Vries, or what?)

That brings me to the FDP and its application. Unfortunately, dear colleagues in the FDP parliamentary group, we are now conducting a sham debate that you initiated without any new knowledge, in which you would like to present yourself as an advocate for the new breeding techniques. In terms of content, you are presenting all the CDU / CSU arguments again today. Together with Julia Klöckner, we have long been calling for the new breeding techniques to be used by the breeding houses. We therefore reject the application.

We all know that the EU Commission is currently preparing a report on the new breeding techniques. I am sure that with this expert opinion behind us, we will catch up with the rest of the world again and finally adapt genetic engineering law to the current status.

The scientist Norman Borlaug mentioned at the beginning is said to have saved the lives of 1 billion people with his Green Revolution. He wasn’t even a real biotechnology fanatic. But he was a modernizer who was convinced that 9 to 10 billion people in this world can only be fed in an environmentally friendly and adequate way if all plant breeding possibilities are used. That is why I am also sure that in the long term the scientific facts will lead to us being able to use the possibilities of new breeding techniques.

Dear opponents of modernization, in the interest of the environment and the hungry people of our world: Jump over your shadow and let us not miss these opportunities.

Many thanks.

(Applause from the CDU / CSU – Harald Ebner [BÜNDNIS 90 / DIE GRÜNEN]: Nothing understood when it comes to modernization! Embarrassing! – Countercall from Deputy Jan Korte [DIE LINKE]: Black-Green is really going to be a blast!)
