Bogotá (Nov. 19/20). In the framework of the celebration of 40 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Colombia and China, Vice Minister Francisco Echeverri spoke with his Chinese counterpart Zheng Zeguang, at the X meeting of Political Consultations.

During the virtual meeting, Vice Minister Zheng expressed his solidarity with Colombia for the disasters caused by the winter emergency, mainly in the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, and announced a cash donation of $ 500,000 from his government and $ 100,000 through the Red Cross of that country.

Vice Minister Echeverri, in addition to thanking these donations and the support that Colombia has received during the pandemic, highlighted the advances that have been made in these four decades of friendship in the political, economic, cooperation, cultural, and sports fields, and reiterated the Invitation extended by President Iván Duque to President Xi Jinping to visit Colombia, as soon as conditions permit. For its part, China extended an invitation to Vice President Martha Lucía Ramírez and Foreign Minister Claudia Blum to visit the country.

In relation to economic issues, the Vice Chancellor emphasized the increase in commercial exchange and the arrival of more Chinese companies since the visit of President Iván Duque in July 2019. Precisely, in order to advance in the strengthening of trade and diversification of Colombian products in the Chinese market, the Vice Minister affirmed that it is essential that there be greater speed up in the admissibility processes by the authorities of that country.

The intention to continue cooperation on issues such as health, infrastructure, culture, education, overcoming poverty, creative industries, energy, among others, and also between regions, was also part of the meeting’s agenda. Vice Minister Echeverri indicated that it is essential to advance in the negotiation and signing of memorandums of understanding that are pending (sports and water resources) and in the implementation of other instruments already signed in the field of agriculture, justice and electronic commerce. In turn, both parties recalled their interest in continuing to cooperate at the highest level through schemes such as the China-Colombia Initiative, which complements the Belt and Road Initiative.

Regarding regional and multilateral issues, support for Colombia’s interest in joining APEC was reiterated, the future agenda of meetings of the China – CELAC mechanism was reviewed and possibilities of joint work on issues such as the fight against corruption, media environment and candidacies, among others.

The Political Consultation mechanism was signed in 1990. The latest meetings have been held in Beijing in 2018 and in Bogotá in 2015 and 2013.
