SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood MP has welcomed an intervention from Minister Nichola Mallon that will keep City of Derry Airport open as the North West continues to deal with the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Foyle MP said that the airport is a vital transport link for communities in the North West that performs an important public interest service.

Colum Eastwood MP said:

“City of Derry Airport is critical to the economic development of our city and the entire North West region. It provides a vital transport link for investors and businesses seeking to set up in this part of the island and it sends a very clear message that Derry is open for business.

“Once again Nichola Mallon has made an important strategic intervention that will secure continued operations at the airport as we continue to chart a way through the Covid-19 pandemic. Our response to the pandemic must be to invest in infrastructure, to upgrade our ambitions for rail, active travel and connectivity across these islands. It is not a moment to be scaling back and closing a key regional air hub.

“The SDLP is committed to enhancing transport links across the North and across this island. Since the restoration of government, our Minister has already made important decisions about investment in rail, road and active travel. We are ambitious for our island and we will continue to deliver for everyone who lives here.”
