Conference discusses transformation opportunities after the corona crisis
Billions in economic stimulus programs have been and are being launched worldwide to mitigate the economic and social consequences of the corona crisis. The Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) and the Federal Environment Agency (UBA) see these programs as an opportunity to make the economic recovery after the corona crisis crisis-proof and future-proof – by setting the course for a more sustainable society. At the “Sustainability Transformation Conference” organized by UBA and the Federal Environment Ministry (BMU) today, international experts are discussing how a socially just and ecological restructuring of the economy and society can look and succeed. Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze: “We want to come out of the corona crisis stronger than before. The right way to do this is to dovetail economic stimuli with effective climate protection. The federal government’s economic stimulus package therefore places a clear focus on future investments. We have to help our economy and our employees by supporting them with ecological restructuring and thus making them fit for the future. International exchange is also important for this. ”Dirk Messner, President of the UBA:“ The corona pandemic is not over yet. But with the announced vaccine, we see light at the end of the tunnel. The climate crisis, however, is far from over. Now we have to ensure that the Corona economic stimulus programs become a springboard for an economy that is sustainable and therefore future-proof. We now need to act quickly and decisively to protect the climate and promote sustainability. At our conference we want to discuss how we can achieve this. ”A UBA analysis of 130 national and international studies has shown that there is a broad consensus on the positive effects and the need for sustainable economic stimulus programs. It is important to embed them in an overall concept of structural reforms that creates the necessary framework for a socio-ecological transformation. Social aspects must also be taken into account. In its position paper “Sustainable ways out of the economic crisis”, the UBA examined the economic and social upheavals caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the UBA, an essential goal must be to align the necessary short and medium-term Corona financial aid in such a way that it simultaneously promotes the long-term change towards a sustainable and climate-neutral society. “If both go hand in hand, we will not lose sight of the UN goals for sustainable development by 2030”, said Messner. At the conference “Socio-ecological transformation on the fast track – Covid-19 as catalyst of change? ” The discussion on the transformation of the economy and society for a sustainable future with national and international stakeholders and experts will take place on November 19, 2020. The aim of the conference is to look at the perspectives of politics, business, science and civil society and to develop options for action in order to advance the transformation. The conference is taking place virtually today. You can follow the conference via the German live stream or the English live stream. The live stream will be activated from 9:30 a.m.
