Bogotá (Nov. 19/20). The Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly approved by consensus the resolution “Prevent and combat corrupt practices and the transfer of the proceeds of corruption, facilitating the recovery of assets and returning those assets to legitimate owners, in particular to countries of origin, in accordance with the United Nations Convention against Corruption ”.

Chancellor Claudia Blum said that “this important resolution was led by Colombia, was co-sponsored by 63 delegations and constitutes a valuable instrument to advance globally in the fight against the scourge of corruption, and against money laundering and return of assets acquired on the basis of corrupt actions ”.

The document recognizes the impact of corruption on sustainable development and the barriers it creates in the goal of eradicating poverty. Likewise, it proposes actions that connect the work of the States in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with the shared objectives of preventing and punishing corruption.

Chancellor Blum added that the resolution “highlights the value of education, human rights, institutional strengthening, and includes the participation of civil society and the private sector in the fight against this type of crime.”

It is noteworthy that these efforts are framed within the priorities of the National Development Plan 2018-2022, “Legality” pillar, as well as in Colombia’s foreign policy objectives, related to the country’s leadership in the actions of the multilateral agenda. to prevent and fight corruption and strengthen international cooperation mechanisms with the achievement of concrete results.

The approval of this resolution will strengthen and enrich the global debate with a view to the active participation of all States in the preparatory process for the Special Session of the UN General Assembly against Corruption in 2021, another initiative led by Colombia and in where the international community will have the opportunity to execute forceful and ambitious actions to stop this scourge that affects all societies.
