In May 2021, the World Economic Forum WEF will take place on the Bürgenstock and in Lucerne. The host cantons of Nidwalden and Lucerne have started preparations. A project group led by Felix Howald, entrepreneur and former director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Central Switzerland IHZ, has been formed with the task of coordinating the WEF on site. The World Economic Forum WEF, based in Geneva, decided on October 6, 2020 that the annual meeting 2021 will not take place in January in Davos, due to corona, but from May 17th to May 21st on the Bürgenstock and in Lucerne. The corona crisis also requires great flexibility with this schedule. From today’s perspective, the WEF considers the chance of a staging to be realistic, and the remaining time must be used efficiently. On Saturday, November 14th, 2020, the Nidwalden and Lucerne cantonal governments formed a joint project organization “WEF2021 Bürgenstock-Lake Lucerne”. This consists of the political steering group with Landammann Othmar Filliger and Government Councilor Karin Kayser-Frutschi (both Nidwalden), District President Reto Wyss and Government Councilor Paul Winiker (both Lucerne), Lucerne City President Beat Züsli and Stansstad Mayor Beat Plüss. Project management by Felix Howald Project management was entrusted to Felix Howald, independent entrepreneur and former director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Central Switzerland IHZ. In addition to his good contacts with economic forces and governments in Central Switzerland, his past as a member of the WEF is particularly valued. Adrian Derungs, Director of the IHZ, is at his side as a sub-project manager, who acts as an intermediary and link to the central Swiss economy, in particular to the business, hotel and tourism organizations of the cantons of Nidwalden and Lucerne. Security is guaranteed by the Lucerne police and the Nidwalden canton police. As a liaison, the WEF Security Committee’s chief of staff is at the project manager’s side to provide support in the administrative and legal area , especially for tourism and the event and hotel industry. On the other hand, the WEF offers the opportunity to position Central Switzerland as the best address for international congresses and the MICE sector (meeting, incentive, convention, event). “If we can ensure that everything runs smoothly with the least possible restrictions for the population and at the same time offer the WEF participants a unique experience, then we have done our job well. This is what we expect from ourselves, ”says Othmar Filliger, Nidwaldner Landammann and head of the political steering group. The aim is also to create a positive mood in Central Switzerland beyond the occasion. In cooperation with the WEF, possibilities are currently being sought to integrate “Central Switzerland Moments” into the official program and thus use the WEF 21 as a location promotion for the entire region. The local economy should as far as possible be involved in the event with worldwide appeal. In particular, the tourism and event industry, which is suffering from Covid-19, should also benefit from the event.
Clarify security costs The costs for security are observed critically among the population and in politics. The cost sharing is the subject of the current negotiations. «If possible, we want to be able to provide specific information on security costs this year. By then, the contracts have to be in place and the necessary political decisions have to be made ”, says government councilor Karin Kayser-Frutschi. are connected. Lucerne’s District President Reto Wyss said: “There are many open questions about the procedure, the content, the organization, the processes. We currently do not have any final answers to all of the questions. But we are confident that with a lean, powerful organization and the proverbial central Swiss pragmatism, we will find a solution that is good, pleasant and acceptable for everyone. “
