Bundestag advises on register modernization law

Today the Bundestag is debating the Register Modernization Act in its first reading. The digital policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group Tankred Schipanski explains:

“With the Register Modernization Act, we are raising the potential of digital administration in order to enable faster and more citizen-oriented procedures. In the age of digitization, different authorities have to communicate with each other quickly and be able to clearly assign information to a person. We achieve just that by using the tax ID as a uniform identification number. The law is also an important step for the online access law, which forms the basis for the digitization of our administration in the next few years.

Not only the administration benefits from faster processes, citizens will also have to enter their data less often in the future due to the modernization of registers and the introduction of the tax ID as an identification number. At the same time, we create careful evaluation and control instruments in order to prevent the misuse of data. Citizens can see the use of their data transparently. To ensure rapid implementation, we are investing another 200 million euros in the federal budget in 2021.
