On November 19, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation celebrate the Day of the Missile Forces and Artillery. This memorable date was established 76 years ago by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR of October 21, 1944.
It was on November 19, 1942, with the volleys of thousands of artillery pieces, that the Red Army’s counteroffensive at Stalingrad began, marking a radical turning point in the Great Patriotic War. In this bloody battle, the decisive role of artillery as the main fire striking force, which contributed to the final defeat of the enemy, was manifested.
Modern rocket troops and artillery of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation includes rocket troops and artillery of the Land Forces, artillery of the coastal forces of the Navy and artillery of the Airborne Forces.
Already today, more than 60 percent of the missile troops and artillery are equipped with modern weapons. The troops continue to receive upgraded self-propelled howitzers “Msta-SM” with complexes of automated fire control “Ring”, fully integrated into a single tactical echelon control system, modernized multiple launch rocket systems “Tornado-G”, which have the ability to automatically target a combat vehicle , and large-caliber MLRS “Tornado-S” with increased characteristics in range, firing accuracy and an expanded range of rockets. Units with complexes of unmanned aerial vehicles are already included in all artillery formations.
Rocket, rocket and artillery units are used in the form of reconnaissance and strike (fire) complexes that ensure the destruction of targets in real time.
As part of the creation of advanced weapons, the development of the inter-service artillery complex “Coalition-SV” continues, which is the first step towards the robotization of artillery systems.
In addition, in order to increase the mobility and fire capabilities of battalion artillery, including during operations in the Arctic region, the development of a whole line of models of highly mobile artillery and mortar weapons on various types of wheeled and two-link tracked chassis is being completed.
The formations and military units of the branch of the armed forces showed a high level of proficiency in performing combat training missions, including combat missile launches and live artillery fire during the Kavkaz-2020 strategic command and staff exercise.
