Washington, D.C. – Today, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced they are rescinding the order that grounded the Boeing 737 Max plane. All Max planes have been grounded in the United States since March 2019 following the Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air plane crashes that tragically claimed the lives of 346 people. The ungrounding of the planes follows in depth safety reviews of the Max by the FAA Technical Advisory Board (TAB), Joint Authorities Technical Review (JATR), and U.S. Department of Transportation Inspector General. This is only the first step that must be taken before the planes are cleared to fly again. Repairs must be made to a safety system on each Boeing Max plane and pilots will have to complete mandatory training to fly it.
Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-03) issued the following statement in response to the news:
“It is important that the public have confidence that it is safe to fly on Boeing Max planes and understands how the FAA reached this decision based on the independent safety evaluations and return to service testing done. I look forward to the FAA briefing the public and the families of the victims on how this decision was reached. While Congress did not have a direct say in the ungrounding of the plane, our work on this issue is not done. Yesterday, the House of Representatives unanimously passed the bipartisan Aircraft Certification Reform and Accountability Act (H.R. 8408). The legislation includes numerous, significant reforms to the Federal Aviation Administration’s airplane certification system which will enhance the safety of air passengers and ensure the FAA is free from undo industry influence. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to move forward with this bill so we can get it into law before the end of Congress. We owe it to the victims and families to ensure that this bill is enacted into law and is fully implemented.”
The Aircraft Certification Reform and Accountability Act reforms will collectively ensure that the ODA program functions appropriately, that new technologies like MCAS are properly analysed for their safety, that the cultures at Boeing and FAA embody the right values, and that the FAA is truly an independent regulator.
The bill is the result of nearly two years of effort by Congressman Lipinski, Chairmen DeFazio and Larsen, and other members of the T&I Committee to get to the bottom of the two Boeing Max crashes and craft legislation to protect American travellers. The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee released its final report on its 18-month investigation into the certification of the Boeing 737 MAX earlier this year.
