Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane’s injury problems are mounting ahead of a vital week for his side in both La Liga and the Champions League.
Real Madrid travel to face an in-form Villarreal in La Liga on Saturday, before playing for their Champions League future away to Inter Milan next week and Zidane looks as if he will be without several key players for the games.
Club captain Sergio Ramos was forced out of Spain’s 6-0 win against Germany before halftime on Tuesday with a problem in his right hamstring, and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed after the game that he had “a sharp pain,” in the muscle.
To make matters worse for Zidane, Ramos’ usual partner in the heart of the Real Madrid defense, Raphael Varane was substituted at halftime in France’s 4-2 win over Sweden, which was also played on Tuesday night with “some problems,” and he too has to be considered a doubt for the forthcoming games.
That leaves just Eder Militao and Nacho Fernandez as Real Madrid’s two fit central defenders, but Militao’s presence is by no means assured given that he has yet to train with the rest of the squad after testing positive for the coronavirus around three weeks ago, while Nacho lacks match fitness after recovering from an injury he suffered against FC Barcelona on October 24th.
Dani Carvajal should be back after missing a couple of months with a knee injury, but he too lacks match fitness, while Lucas Vazquez, who has covered effectively on the right of the Madrid defense is also out with a muscle problem.
Not only is Real Madrid’s defense in tatters ahead of the visits to Villarreal and Milan, but Uruguayan midfielder Fede Valverde is also sidelined after suffering a broken bone in his shin, Casemiro has also been diagnosed with COVID-19 and unlikely to be available and striker Karim Benzema is a major doubt after suffering a muscle problem in the 4-1 defeat Real Madrid suffered in Valencia on the eve of the international break.
That means Zidane is likely to not only be without his central defenders, but also his two most important covering midfielders at a time when he needs to see the team recover from the humiliation they suffered in Valencia which has once again put him under pressure.
