WIESBADEN – Whether multiple children are like one another like one egg or just like siblings is not recorded statistically. The number of these, however, does: Among the 781,000 newborns born in this country in 2019, around 29,000 were multiple children. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), every 27th newborn was a multiple child. This means that the proportion of multiple children in all newborns was 3.7%.

Twins make up the majority (98%) of multiple births: 14,088 pairs of twins were born in 2019, there were triplets 265 times and quadruplets or other multiple births 5 times. While there was the lowest proportion of multiple children in 1977 – 1.8% or every 56th newborn – their proportion has increased since the 1980s.

The increased number of multiple births can be attributed on the one hand to modern reproductive medicine, which helps many couples with an unfulfilled desire to have children. As part of artificial insemination, expectant mothers can be implanted with several embryos. The first time a child conceived by means of artificial insemination was born in Germany in 1982. In that year the share of multiple children in all newborns was 1.9%.

On the other hand, according to the state of the art, the probability of multiple births generally increases with the age of the woman. In 2019, 26% of mothers of multiple births were between 35 and 39 years old. This means that their share in this age group is higher than the average for mothers of all live births (21%).

While last 7% of the multiple mothers were 40 and older, their share in the mothers of all live births was 4.5%.

Methodological note: Information and data on artificial insemination are not available in the birth statistics. Live and stillborn children are included in the number of newborns and multiples.
