A female child was killed and five other civilians were wounded in a Katyusha rocket barrage targeting the heavily fortified Green Zone in the Iraqi capital Baghdad on Tuesday, the Iraqi military said.
Several projectiles “landed on Grand festivities Square and surrounding areas, and near the Medical City and Zawra Park” on Tuesday evening, the media office of the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC) said in a statement.
“What the capital Baghdad witnessed on Tuesday evening will not pass without accountability, and our security forces and intelligence service have begun procedures to identify the perpetrators to bring them to justice,” the JOC statement said.
In an earlier statement, the JOC said that four Katyusha rockets were fired from the al-Amin neighborhood in eastern Baghdad at the Green Zone.
The attack prompted the anti-missile weapons to fire back on the rockets, while sirens were heard in the zone, which houses some of the main Iraqi government offices and the U.S. embassy, according to an Interior Ministry source.
No group has so far claimed responsibility for the attack, but the Iraqi military bases housing U.S. troops across Iraq and the U.S. embassy in the Green Zone have been frequently targeted by mortar and rocket attacks.
U.S. troops have been deployed in Iraq to support the Iraqi forces in the battles against the Islamic State militants, mainly by providing training and advising services.
