The corona pandemic continues to keep Germany under control. Even if the curve of new infections flattens out, a trend reversal is not yet in sight. Therefore, Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Prime Ministers of the federal states have not yet been able to announce any easing in their interim review of the November measures. Instead, they call on people to restrict contacts in the private sphere even more.

Brinkhaus: “Considerable effort” needed

Union parliamentary group leader Ralph Brinkhaus emphasized: “Our goal is to get down from the high numbers – not only to weaken the dynamism of the increase.” In comparison to the neighboring states, which have resorted to much stricter means such as curfews and business closings, Germany is doing well . “To keep it that way for us, we will have to make considerable efforts in the next few weeks,” he demanded. The aim is to keep schools open as far as possible and to enable economic life as much as possible.

The federal and state governments want to discuss how to proceed again on November 25th. Chancellor Angela Merkel announced that an outlook for the turn of the year will then be given in order to offer people “a bit of predictability”.

The health system must remain intact

So that the health care system is not overloaded, the number of new infections must fall back to below 50 per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days. This is also a prerequisite for the health authorities to be able to track infection chains and keep the spread of the pandemic under control. Union faction deputy Thorsten Frei had warned in the “Welt”: “Hasty easing would only make a much stricter lockdown necessary at Christmas time or risk the collapse of our health system.”

No private parties until Christmas

According to the decision of the federal-state conference, meetings and encounters are to be further restricted. Citizens are called upon to reduce contact with other people outside of their own household to an absolutely necessary minimum, according to the agreement. They should refrain from private parties entirely. Leisure activities and unnecessary trips should be avoided, as should trips by public transport.

Immediately quarantine with symptoms of a cold

People with colds like a cough or runny nose should stay at home until the symptoms have subsided. You can get a sick note for your employer from your doctor after consulting you over the phone. Older and weakened people are only allowed to visit those who are free from cold symptoms. 15 so-called FFP2 masks are to be given to people who are particularly susceptible to infections. You only have to pay a small contribution yourself. The federal government assumes the vast majority of the costs for the masks.

Support for intensive care units

Further steps are to be initiated in so-called regional hotspots and in certain groups in which the new infections are piling up. The federal states want to discuss the question of how the risk of infection in schools can be reduced on November 25th. Hospitals that postpone scheduled operations and treatments to have intensive care beds ready for COVID-19 patients receive financial support.

Prepare vaccination centers

The federal states will prepare themselves for the imminent approval of one or more vaccines so that they can put the structures for mass vaccination into operation at short notice. It is planned to set up 60 centers where vaccination can be carried out. Mobile teams support these centers by driving to nursing homes or clinics. Everyone is free to be vaccinated or not.
