Animal product prices fell by almost 10%
Animal product prices decreased by 9.9% in September 2020 compared to the same month last year. They last fell that much in May 2016. The decline is mainly due to the sustained fall in pork prices, which fell by 25.6% within a year (August 2020 compared to August 2019: -19.4%). Here there is a connection to the corona-related restrictions in gastronomy, which may have led to a lower demand for pork. In addition, swine fever also reached Germany in September 2020 and had an impact on supply and demand, and thus on pork prices.
In contrast, the prices for sheep and goats rose by 17.6% from September 2019 to September 2020 (August 2020 compared to August 2019: + 24.2%).
Plant product prices increased by 1%
In contrast to animal products, the prices for plant products rose by 1.0% in September 2020 compared to the same month of the previous year. This was the first time since July 2019 that they were up slightly. The increase is mainly due to the 7.7% higher price for grain (especially bread wheat and corn). It can be assumed that the supply decreased in September 2020 due to crop failures due to the spring drought. There were also price increases for vegetable and horticultural products: In September 2020 they were 3.0% higher than in September 2019. In particular, producer prices rose for cucumbers (+28.9%) and mushrooms (+15, 3%).
For table potatoes, on the other hand, prices have been falling for several months: in September 2020 they were 41.9% cheaper than in the same month last year. On the one hand, this is due to the effects of the corona pandemic, since sales opportunities to the catering industry have collapsed here too. The resulting oversupply was increased by the arrival of the new potato harvest, which overall led to a significant drop in prices.
The index of producer prices for agricultural products measures the development of sales prices in agriculture in Germany and thus shows price developments at the first economic level.
