Source: Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany Olaf Bandt, BUND Chairman: “With the ARD sustainability report, ten public broadcasters have for the first time agreed on a joint presentation of their respective activities on sustainability. The report presents numerous examples of energy savings, ecological mobility and environmental education. In doing so, he serves society and in particular the media industry as a role model for the environmentally friendly use of our resources. BUND praises the fact that ARD is clearly committed to the German Sustainability Code and takes responsibility for this social challenge. ”Mechthild Kaub, BUND expert for environment and media policy, adds:“ The report documents the strengths of the public broadcasters. The program provides detailed, balanced and competent information on nature and environmental protection issues. The broadcasters are increasingly taking into account the challenges of climate protection. We welcome the focus of this year’s ARD theme week on climate change and sustainability. As an environmental association, however, we would like the necessity of sustainable action and its urgency in view of the advancing climate crisis to be named even more clearly in the report. ”In the sustainability report, ARD proposes that sustainable management inevitably leads to cost increases. Sustainable action and cost awareness are opposed to each other as a conflict of goals. It is correct that the ARD asks the legislature to clarify how sustainable action is possible under the principle of thrift. However, the BUND encourages the media association not to wait for a legal obligation to sustainability in the next state media treaty. “In order to use the possibilities of sustainable economic activity, there is no need for legal requirements, existing potential for resource conservation and CO2 reduction can already be exploited. Sustainability and economy are by no means mutually exclusive, ”says Bandt. In addition, the ARD is currently focusing its measures on the most sensitive area of program production, namely commissioned production. However, it would be advisable to start implementing sustainable measures in the broadcasters themselves and in their supervisory bodies. The BUND also suggests that all broadcasters name contact persons for sustainability in their houses and provide sufficient funds for innovative, sustainable work processes. This is the only way to ensure a swift exchange between the production industry, film funding and civil society. More information to the overview
