Representatives of the Main Command of the Navy, the Navigation and Oceanography Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense met in St. Petersburg the scientific expedition ship “Akademik Fedorov”, which had returned from an expedition to the Arctic. The members of the expedition solved the tasks of conducting research for three months, of which two months in difficult arctic conditions. During this time, research work has been carried out on more than 10 thousand linear kilometers.
The expedition was carried out on the scientific expedition ship “Akademik Fedorov” under the escort of the nuclear icebreaker “50 Let Pobedy”. During the expedition from August 18 to November 12, 2020 under the joint leadership of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, the Main Command of the Navy, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Ecology of the Russian Federation, with the leading role of the State Research Navigation and Hydrographic Institute with the participation of FSUE Atomflot, FSBI AANII “, FSBI” VNII “Okeangeologiya” successfully carried out comprehensive bathymetric studies in the Arctic Ocean.
Preparations for the expedition were carried out from June 23 to August 17, 2020.
The work was carried out in difficult ice conditions with an ice cover of concentration from 8 to 10 points, the ice thickness reached 1.5–2 m.
The main task of comprehensive research in the Arctic Ocean in 2020 was to obtain additional data on the seabed topography and the distribution of bottom sediments in order to prepare a digital model of the seabed topography.
The full scope of work stipulated by the assignment, bathymetric studies in the areas of the Gakkel ridge, Lomonosov ridge, and the southern part of the Chukotka plateau, has been completed.
The Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, sent a welcoming speech to the expedition participants, in which he noted that “the development and oceanographic research of the Arctic zone is a priority in the activities of the Navy. At present, effective interdepartmental interaction has developed in the study of the Arctic Ocean, which ensures our leadership in the implementation of the tasks set in this region. “
