Washington, D.C.  As the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Republicans’ lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act, U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement condemning their attempts to take away health care from millions of Americans during a global pandemic:

“It’s unconscionable that Republicans – with the full support of the White House – are continuing their relentless attacks on Americans’ health care in the middle of a pandemic that has killed nearly 250,000 of our fellow citizens. If Republicans are successful in their efforts, insurance companies can go back to denying coverage to individuals with pre-existing conditions, young adults under the age of 26 will no longer be covered under their parents’ plans, patients will no longer receive free annual exams and wellness checks, and women can be charged more for the same health care. The Medicaid expansion that has helped so many hardworking families get covered would be gone.

“The only proposal we’ve seen from Republicans would increase premiums, put an age tax on Americans 55 years and older, and would not protect people with pre-existing conditions. Their lawsuit is shameful and without merit, and I hope the Supreme Court will see it for what it is.”
