Washington, D.C. — Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) released the following statement commemorating Veterans Day:

“On Veterans Day, we honor the brave servicemembers who risked their lives and continue to serve our country. As the proud daughter of a veteran, I’m committed to working in Congress to ensure we keep our promises to our veterans and military families who have served selflessly and answered our nation’s call of duty.

“My father, Lieutenant Colonel Garvin Tutt, served in both World War II and the Korean War. He sacrificed to serve his country despite the discrimination and racism he faced at home and in the military as an African American. I work to honor his legacy and ensure that our servicemembers and veterans are able to live with dignity and security.

“Congress must do more to ensure that Veterans have access to quality healthcare, housing, childcare, and a job that pays a living wage. Especially in the midst of a pandemic, we must bolster resources for VA medical services, invest in programs for women veterans, and invest in mental health, suicide and homeless prevention services, and fund medical research to improve the lives of veterans suffering from chronic illness following their service.

“As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I am pleased that in the FY 2021 Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill we were able to secure $153 million for the construction of a VA Outpatient Clinic and National Cemetery in Alameda Point, in my Congressional district. I will continue fighting in Congress to fully support our veterans when they return from their service.

“To our veterans and military families, thank you for your service and your sacrifices.”
