19,300 more children started school than in 2019 – increase in all federal states

Press release No. 446 from November 11, 2020

WIESBADEN – At the beginning of the current school year 2020/2021, 752,700 children were enrolled in Germany. That was 19,300 or 2.6% more than in the previous year. The increase in the number of school enrollments that has been observed since the 2016/2017 school year continues. According to preliminary results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has reported that the number of school enrollments has increased in all federal states. The federal states of Bremen and Lower Saxony recorded the largest percentage increases with 8.2% each and Schleswig-Holstein with 7.1%.

The sharp increase in school enrollment is due to demographic developments: at the end of 2019 there were a total of 2.6% more children of the age relevant for school enrollment (5 to 7 year olds) nationwide than in the previous year. One reason for the overall increase in school enrollment is likely to be the increased immigration in recent years. For example, the number of children of foreign nationality relevant to school age rose by 10.0%, while the number of 5 to 7-year-old children with German nationality was 1.6% higher than at the end of 2018.

While the majority of those starting school began their education at primary schools (93.4%), 3.2% were enrolled in special schools, 2.5% in integrated comprehensive schools and 0.9% in free Waldorf schools. This almost corresponds to the distribution of the previous year.

Nationwide, enrollment at special schools (+ 3.2%), elementary schools (+ 2.7%) and integrated comprehensive schools (+1.5%) increased compared to the previous year, while the number of enrollments at independent Waldorf schools (-1.4 %) decreased.

Methodological notes:

The results of the training courses are preliminary data. In addition to early and timely school enrollment, there are children whose enrollment in the previous year was postponed or postponed at parents’ request. Different school enrollment dates also have an influence on the comparability between the federal states.
