Parliamentary State Secretary opens conference “Impulses for Europe: Equal Opportunities and Diversity in Research

On November 11 and 12, 2020, the digital conference “Impulses for Europe: Equal Opportunities and Diversity in Research” will take place as part of the German EU Council Presidency. Michael Meister, Parliamentary State Secretary at the Federal Minister of Education and Research, explains at the opening: “The Federal Ministry of Education and Research has been committed to promoting equal opportunities for women in science and research and to promoting the necessary structural change for many years. It is our task to promote the framework conditions for the academic development of women. Only in this way can we succeed in fully exploiting the existing innovation and talent potential in the science system – in Germany and Europe. The conscious consideration of gender aspects in research also increases the informative value, applicability and sustainability of research results, as they address the specific needs of women and men equally oriented. This also increases the equity in the applicability of research results, for example in medicine. In addition, diverse working groups have a positive impact on the quality of research due to the diversity of perspectives, experiences and skills of their members and generate considerable added value. Equal opportunities and diversity make our research even better. ”Background: The proportion of women at all academic qualification levels in Germany has increased continuously over the past ten years, and more women are finding their way to the top positions in the science system. Equality between women and men at universities has been strengthened. In the coalition agreement, the federal government stipulated that equality would continue to be promoted during the German EU Council Presidency. The BMBF has been promoting this development for years, including with the federal and state programs for women professors. With the continuation of the program for women professors, the federal and state governments are contributing to increasing the proportion of women at all qualification levels up to top positions in science. The federal and state governments have increased their financial commitment and are funding the program in the third phase with a total of 200 million euros. The successes of this work will be presented at the conference “Impulses for Europe: Equal Opportunities and Diversity in Research”. Structural equality goals and the consideration of gender and diversity aspects in research are central topics of the conference. Forward-looking approaches are presented and new impulses are set for the implementation of equal opportunities and diversity in the science system for the European research area. The event is aimed at those involved in German and European science and gender equality policy from universities, research institutions and politics. Due to the corona pandemic, the conference will be held digitally. The live broadcasts will be posted on the English and German-language homepage. Other digital formats such as the presentation of examples of good practice on equal opportunities in the science system from Germany, a roundtable with successful women scientists and an information film on the professors’ program of the federal and state governments are also shown here.
