Press release No. 447 from November 11, 2020

WIESBADEN – Almost 9 out of 10 collective bargaining employees in Germany (87.4%) will receive a Christmas bonus in 2020. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this is a slightly higher proportion than in 2019 (86.9%). Corona-related cancellations of collectively agreed Christmas bonuses have not yet been identified based on the information available to us. While the proportion of employees entitled to Christmas bonuses in eastern Germany rose from 86.4% in the previous year to 90.0%, the proportion in western Germany remained the same (87.0% in each case). The gross Christmas bonus of these employees in 2020 averages 2,661 euros. That is 1.1% more than in 2019. The average Christmas bonus for employees under collective wage agreements in western Germany (2,684 euros) is 7.2% higher than in eastern Germany (2,503 euros).

The amount of the Christmas bonus strongly depends on the industry

The amount of the collectively agreed Christmas bonus varies greatly in the individual sectors, in which several collective agreements can be incorporated. An above-average collectively agreed Christmas bonus will be paid in 2020 for example in the area of ”Extraction of oil and natural gas”. All employees (100%) benefit from the average of 5,910 euros paid in this area. The collectively agreed Christmas bonus for broadcasters is also above average at 5 509 euros and in the “energy supply” sector at 4 991 euros. While in the field of “energy supply” almost all collective bargaining employees are entitled to a Christmas bonus (99.9%), the figure for broadcasters is a good three quarters (76.7%).

The Christmas bonus is close to the macroeconomic average in the areas of “clothing manufacture” (2,677 euros) and “metal production and processing” (2,462 euros). In these areas, 100% or 92.7% of all collective bargaining employees receive a Christmas bonus.

The lowest Christmas bonus is paid to employees in the area of “placement and leasing of workers”. Here, an average of 364 euros is paid to 99.0% of the collective bargaining employees. There is also a below-average Christmas bonus of 493 euros in the area of “agriculture, hunting and related activities”. Here 73.9% of the collective bargaining employees are entitled to a Christmas bonus.

Methodological note:

The evaluations of the Christmas bonus are based on the wage, salary and remuneration collective agreements as well as works agreements, which are also recorded for the regular calculation of the wage indices. The provides an overview of the calculation of the tariff index Method report. All additional annual special payments that will be paid in November and December 2020 are counted towards the Christmas bonus. A detailed table by area and branch of industry can be found in the topic area Collective wages. Information on sectoral collective agreements is available from our Tariff database can be accessed.
