From 13 to 17 November, social media users will receive a lecture on the conquerors of the Moon, a virtual meeting with an astronaut and a participant in the Soviet lunar program, a thematic excursion and an exciting online quiz.
VDNKh has prepared a special online program “Days of the Moon” for space lovers. It is timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the start of work on the moon of the world’s first self-propelled vehicle “Lunokhod-1” (it was delivered to its surface on November 17, 1970). So, from November 13 to 17, everyone will have a thematic excursion, a lecture on space conquerors, a virtual meeting with astronauts and an exciting online quiz.
Most of the events will be broadcast live on the exhibition page on the social network “Classmates”, and the quiz will be held on Instagram accounts VDNKh and center “Cosmonautics and Aviation”.
The educational program “Days of the Moon” starts on November 13 – on the birthday of the chief designer of the Soviet automatic stations for the study of the natural satellite of the Earth and the planets of the solar system Georgy Babakin. Under his leadership, the world’s first self-propelled vehicle “Lunokhod-1” was created.
On this day, townspeople are invited to join the virtual cognitive walk “To the Moon and Back”. Sightseers in the company of a guide will “walk” through the halls of the “Cosmonautics and Aviation” center and examine its exhibits. For example, they will see full-size mock-ups of the automatic interplanetary stations Luna-3, Luna-21 and the second in a series of Soviet self-propelled rovers, Lunokhod-2. The guides will also show what the real lunar soil looks like, explain where the ice comes from on the Moon and on which side of the satellite to look for the Moscow Sea. The broadcast will be shown on the VDNKh social network page “Classmates”… Beginning at 18:00.
November 14 at 17:00 will present a lecture “The Conquerors of the Moon”. It will be read by Denis Prudnik, co-chairman of the youth council of the Russian Space Society, popularizer of cosmonautics. He will tell about interesting facts from the history of man’s exploration of the Moon, and also talk about manned space flights and the era of Soviet lunar rovers. The broadcast will take place on the exhibition page in the social network “Classmates”.
And on November 15, subscribers of instagram accounts VDNKh and center “Cosmonautics and Aviation”an exciting online quiz awaits. The players in the “True or False” format will have to answer the questions prepared by the pilot-cosmonaut Hero of Russia Fyodor Yurchikhin. All tasks will relate to the moon and the history of its development. It will be possible to join the intellectual game from 12:00 in the “Stories” section. The results will be available immediately after passing the quiz.
The educational program will end with an online meeting with cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin and the driver of the first lunar rover Vyacheslav Dovgan. Viewers will learn how the lunar rovers were designed, what training the crew members underwent and what space programs for exploring the moon are currently in place. In addition, it will be possible to ask questions to specialists in the comments under the air. The broadcast will take place on the VDNKh social network page “Classmates” November 17 at 13:00.
On the same day in the blog #CosmosFromHomeon the site of the center “Cosmonautics and Aviation” will publish an article by the guides of the center. In it they will tell about the journey of the self-propelled vehicle “Lunokhod-1” on the surface of the satellite.
Lunokhod-1 is the world’s first rover that successfully operated on the Moon from November 17, 1970 to September 14, 1971. It was intended to study the features of the lunar surface, radioactive and X-ray cosmic radiation on the Moon, the chemical composition and properties of the soil. For 11 lunar days (10.5 Earth months), the device traveled 10,540 meters.
The Cosmonautics and Aviation Center is located in the renovated historical pavilion No. 34 “Cosmos” at VDNKh. It opened in April 2018. The center is the largest space museum complex in Russia; its large-scale exposition is dedicated to the history of the achievements of the domestic space industry.
