Virtual meeting on the role of women in faith and diplomacy

The virtual conference “Women, Faith and Diplomacy” of the multi-religious network Religions for Peace will take place from November 10th to 13th. Volker Kauder, in the CDU / CSU parliamentary group responsible for value issues, religious freedom and the fight against persecution of Christians, explains:

“The World Assembly of Religions for Peace, which was opened by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier last year, was a complete success with great aftereffects. Now, for the first time, a conference of the multi-religious network takes place entirely on the question of strengthening the visibility of women in faith and diplomacy. It is an important commitment and signal from Religions for Peace to dedicate this gathering entirely to the outstanding goal of focusing on the role of women and empowering them.

Because it is always women who react with extreme prudence and calm in situations of social and political unrest. Women all over the world bear enormous responsibility, not only within families, but also in areas of public health care, in public offices and in the economy. In the religious communities, in diplomacy and politics in particular, women all too often remain almost invisible. From a global perspective, they suffer disproportionately from the consequences of violent conflicts, poverty, inadequate education and restrictions on their freedoms – especially freedom of religion.

After several decades in federal politics with many business trips around the world, it is clear to me that further progress and further development can only be achieved by empowering women. Women of faith must therefore be strengthened and put in a position where their competence, their specialist knowledge and their courageous commitment become more visible. This also means that women are given more decision-making responsibility.

In the coming days, several hundred international religious representatives, diplomats and representatives from politics and society will discuss solutions for strengthening the role of women in faith in diplomacy and exchange ideas on how the development towards a fairer participation of Women can be pushed. “

Background: Religions for Peace is a multi-religious association that advocates interreligious dialogue and peace. The network will hold a conference from November 10 to 13, 2020, dedicated to the role of women in faith and diplomacy. Hundreds of leaders from religion, diplomacy and politics will take part in the event.

This year’s event will take place virtually due to the corona pandemic and will be controlled from Lindau on Lake Constance. Originally a physical meeting was planned in Lindau on Lake Constance, where over 900 leading figures from religion and politics came together for the world conference of Religions for Peace last year. This year the invitation goes under the title “1st Assembly on Women, Faith & Diplomacy: Keeping the Faith and Transforming”. Volker Kauder is one of the longstanding supporters of Religions for Peace. The Department of Culture of the Foreign Office will support the meeting financially.
