Labor market situation in the canton of Vaud
While the unemployment rate has remained stable at the Swiss level, that of the canton of Vaud has fallen by 0.1 point to stand at 4.5% at the end of October 2020.
The number of registered unemployed (1) in the canton of Vaud fell to 18,801 in October, a drop of 225 people compared to the end of September 2020 (-1.2%). The number of job seekers (2) fell to 29,488 (-0.1%). However, the canton of Vaud has 5,196 unemployed people and 6,392 more job seekers than a year ago in October 2019.
During the month of October 2020, the Vaud ORPs registered 3,337 new job seekers and canceled 3,376 files. The number of vacant workplaces announced by employers to the Vaudois ORPs stands at 2,899, down 24.0% compared to September 2020 and 21.6% compared to October 2019.
Compared to last month, the most significant reductions in numbers concern the unemployed registered for less than 12 months (-331), holders of “CFC or federal maturity” (-216), 20 to 29 year olds (-115) , “commercial and office employees” (-81) and “care assistants, child minders” (-50).
Regionally, the unemployment rate increased by 0.2 points this month in the Broye-Vully (5.0%) and Riviera-Pays-d’Enhaut (5.2%) districts, while that of Aigle (4.5%), Jura-Nord Vaud (4.0%), Lavaux-Oron (3.7%) and Nyon (4.1%) remain stable. All the other districts saw their rate drop: -0.1 point for Morges (3.5%) and -0.2 point for Gros-de-Vaud (3.1%), Lausanne (5.6%) and West Lausanne (5.0%).
The number of beneficiaries of the integration income (RI) registered with an ORP amounts to 2,479, down by 5 people in one month (-0.2%) and 176 people in one year (-6, 6%).
As SECO confirms in its monthly publication, if the canton of Vaud practiced like the majority of the cantons, its unemployment rate would be reduced by 0.4 point and reach 4.1%. Indeed, the canton of Vaud is one of the only cantons to list unemployed people at the end of their rights: it brings together 76% of all social assistance recipients registered as unemployed in Switzerland.
