Assaults on “lateral thinkers” demonstrations unacceptable

At the “lateral thinking” demonstration in Leipzig over the weekend, there were numerous violent attacks on journalists. The cultural and media policy spokeswoman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Elisabeth Motschmann, explains:

“The CDU / CSU parliamentary group condemns the physical attacks on journalists – like those on police officers – in Leipzig in the strongest terms. The so-called ‘lateral thinkers’ are thus abusing their right to demonstrate. With the freedom of the press, you violate another, equivalent fundamental right.

Cases of violence against journalists are increasing in the vicinity of demonstrations against the measures to contain the coronavirus. These massive obstacles to the journalistic profession are no longer acceptable. Because freedom of the press is a very important asset. Without them, our plural democracy cannot function.

We must prevent media representatives from creating a climate of fear around demonstrations against the anti-corona measures, so that they can no longer report on these rallies. This aspect must also be included in future careful considerations as to whether such demonstrations can actually be approved. “
