Following an incident in Barton Fields Road, Oxford this evening (8/11) Thames Valley Police has authorised a section 60 order.

The Section 60 order applies to the area of New Barton to the North of the Northern by-pass and the Northway area of Headington – A420, Trafford Road and the Easton by pass.

A Section 60 order temporarily allows officers greater powers to stop and search in a defined location.

The order is in place until 7am tomorrow (9/11) and will be reviewed and if necessary extended for a further period.

Inspector Neil Applegarth, of the Oxford City Local Police Area, said: “We have authorised the order following an incident this afternoon in Barton Fields Road.

“I understand that this may cause concern within the local community, however please be reassured that there will be an increased police presence in the local area throughout the duration of this order.

“Under this order, our officers have been given authority to use their powers under Section 60 and we do not take decisions to enact them lightly.

“Please do not be worried if you are stopped by an officer as this does not mean that you are in trouble.

“Please do not hesitate to speak to one of our officers with any concerns that you may have. They will be happy to address these with you and also offer any advice or reassurance that you require.”
