In the Smolensk Region, in a separate helicopter regiment of the Leningrad Air Force and Air Defense Association of the Western Military District, training flights were carried out at night.

During the training, the pilots of the Mi-8 multipurpose transport helicopters, the Mi-8 Night Hunter reconnaissance and attack helicopters, and the Mi-35 attack helicopters under conditions of limited visibility conducted paired take-offs, flights in units at minimum intervals at altitudes of 100-150 m at a speed of up to 200 km / h, and also performed escape maneuvers in the air when fired by air-to-air and ground-to-air missiles.

In addition, the pilots practiced landing an aircraft on unlit, unmarked sites without the use of landing lights, using NVG night vision goggles.

Flights at night are complicated by low illumination of the earth’s surface, deterioration in the visibility of objects and the monotony of the environment.

In total, the crews performed 3 flight shifts, more than 10 helicopters of various modifications, more than 30 crew members were involved in the flights.
