Grabbing 19 out of the total 21 points in the second phase of the season, Truong Viet Hoang’s side claimed the top honour with a two point lead over 2019 title holders Hanoi FC.
This was the first V.League 1 crown for Hoang in the managerial role. Meanwhile, the 2020 season marks the fourth time that veteran player Nguyen Trong Hoang has climbed top, after 2011 with Song Lam Nghe An, and 2014 and 2015 with Becamex Binh Duong.
Viettel’s Bruno Cantanhede scores the only goal of the match.
After just 18 minutes, assisted by Hoang Duc with a nice cross, Bruno fired a powerful header that hit the ground before beating goalkeeper Van Phong to seal the decisive victory for the visitors.
As the overall champions, Viettel FC received the gold medal and the V.League 1 trophy together with a cash prize of VND3 billion (US$129,600).
Truong Viet Hoang’s side deserves to pick sweet fruits following their concerted efforts throughout the season.
On the same day, Hanoi FC brilliantly demolished Quang Ninh Coal 4-0 thanks to Quang Hai (12’), Van Quyet (42’) and Rimario (78’, 82’) to settle for second place overall. Despite missing out on the trophy, Chu Dinh Nghiem’s side were impressive in their performance throughout the season, scoring the most goals (37) and conceding the fewest goals (just 16).
With the 2020 V.League crown, Viettel FC have been guaranteed a place in the group stage of the AFC Champions League next year, while National Cup winners Hanoi FC and V.League 1’s third-place Saigon FC will represent Vietnam to compete in the AFC Cup.
