The Secretary-General held a telephone conversation today with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, of the Federal Republic of Ethiopia.
They discussed the ongoing tensions in the Tigray region. The Secretary-General expressed condolences for the recent deaths in clashes and offered his good offices.
Today’s conversation followed calls to Prime-Minister Abdalla Hamdok, of Sudan, in his capacity as Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), and to the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, in which the Secretary-General expressed the readiness of the United Nations to support the IGAD and the African Union in any initiative to address the situation.
