The Federal Environment Ministry supports Superior Industries Production Germany GmbH in investing in an environmentally friendly and highly flexible coating system as part of the environmental innovation program. The company produces light alloy wheels for the automotive industry. At the production site in Werdohl (North Rhine-Westphalia), the use of the new coating system can reduce the annual energy requirement by a total of almost 600,000 kilograms of CO2 equivalents. The powder waste and the use of solvents during color changes can also be reduced by more than 80 percent compared to a conventional paint shop. High-quality surfaces with excellent product quality are important in the manufacture of light alloy wheels. The painting is the last step in the manufacturing process of the aluminum wheel. This consists of the process steps pretreatment, powder coating and wet painting. The color and type change is associated with considerable ecological inefficiencies in the area of ​​powder and wet painting and a high cleaning effort. The contaminated solvents that arise during cleaning are recovered in an energy-intensive manner, the paint sludge that remains must be disposed of as hazardous waste. This challenge is growing due to the increasing demand for different colors and wheel types. The aim of the project is to increase resource and energy efficiency in combination with a high level of system flexibility and productivity by means of innovative powder conveying, dosing and processing. Optimized process chains and an intelligent design of the system technology achieve, among other things, shorter color change times in the wet paint area, higher coating qualities and more compact system dimensions for the multi-color powder booths. The environmental innovation program promotes the first large-scale application of an innovative technology. The project must go beyond the state of the art and should have a demonstration character.
