The threat level to Germany’s security remains high
Our security is threatened from several sides. Violent right-wing extremism, terrorist Islamism and militant left-wing extremism grapple with the free democratic basic order and threaten the democratic constitutional state.
The intelligence services have a lot to do with gathering and analyzing information on the various terrorist and extremist threats. For many years, the news services of aviation companies, financial service providers, telecommunications and telemedia companies have been allowed to collect certain data. The fact that this instrument is really needed and used appropriately by the intelligence services has been checked several times in the past few years. That is why the powers of the services have already been extended three times.
Bundestag removes the powers of intelligence services
Now the German Bundestag is passing the “Law on the Limitation of Regulations for Combating Terrorism”. This gives the intelligence services permission to continue collecting the data. The previous limitation of the powers no longer applies.
There is still a practical need for the regulations
This extension of the time limit is necessary because the threat to Germany’s security remains high. The practical need for the regulations is there. Germany currently has around 630 Islamist threats and a high double-digit and significantly increasing number of right-wing extremist threats. Crimes motivated by left-wing extremism have increased by almost 40 percent in the past year, and the development of terrorist structures is now also being discussed in the case of left-wing extremism. Only with effective tools to elucidate these dangers can intelligence services effectively protect our open society from their enemies.
